Gone Fishin' for Fun, Found Joy Unexpectedly

As you may (or may not) have seen, real life besties Alanah and Ashleigh have decided to try a bunch of new hobbies this year in search of joy and I have decided to record all of our awesome wins (and epic fails) as our very own blog series.

So we started off strong (and in our opinion quite a bit too strong) with Fishing. We added such a small sample of Challenging hobbies into our hobbies jar and were hysterical to have picked one out for our first hobby (SPOILER: we both thoroughly enjoyed it).

So, we prepped, we packed and all that was left now was to actually go fishing.

We both gave it a very solid crack but neither of us came up with any fish 😭. I got a couple of nibbles here and there but couldn’t hook any of the fish. BUT, I did see a gorgeous little sea turtle pop his head up which instantly made my day.

Alanah also didn’t catch any fish but her son gave her a beautiful new perspective (which I absolutely adore). Whilst he was holding his fishing rod he felt the fish nibbling, and in his mind that was him catching the fish, he just didn’t get the chance to reel them in.

So really, both of us caught fish!

We then both came into the studio and transferred what we saw on our fishing outings into our Observers Friend.

I recorded the sea turtle that I found, creating a little diagram and important facts about it, whilst Alanah recorded the Barramundi that Noah “caught” as they are so prevalent around North Queensland.

The Observers Friend was perfect for this hobby as you can record specific details about different things that we saw including what, where and when we observed the animals. You can also note the species scientific name and the weather that was experienced at the time of recording. There is then a big grid to draw diagrams, record facts, etc. Anything you can really imagine!

So, fishing was a big win! Something we didn’t expect to find joy in turned out to be such a successful hobby and got us both very excited for the hobbies to come.

Stay tuned to see what we get up to next!
