Your Friends Joined a Coven

6 min read

There are collaborations that make sense on paper from the very beginning.

And then there are the ones that start with, “what if we made a notebook together?” and somehow end with ten people on the Gold Coast, a room full of witches and an entire collection that has become much bigger than either brand first imagined.

Coven was the second kind.

Botanical H2O has always lived naturally in this world. Danielle has built a witchy jewellery brand around pieces that carry symbolism and meaning, made to be worn because of what they represent as much as how they look.

Friend, unsurprisingly, came at it from the paper side.

We make places for thoughts to live. For the things you want to remember properly instead of trusting yourself to somehow remember them later.

So when Danielle and Lana started talking about what a collaboration between Botanical H2O and Friend could actually be, making something for practice felt obvious.

The less obvious part was making sure it was actually useful.

A notebook for the craft, not just the aesthetic

A Spell Journal is a very easy thing to make beautiful.

But that was never going to be enough.

Lana and Danielle worked closely throughout development, looking at what someone actually needs when they sit down to practise their craft. The goal was never to make something that looked witchy on a shelf and then behaved like any other notebook once you opened it.

The pages needed to earn their place.

The finished Spell Journal does just that, in our very humble opinion. It gives your spell work somewhere to live, with guidance for things like sigil creation and space to return afterwards when there is something worth noting.

There is structure where it helps, without deciding what witchcraft needs to look like in someone else’s hands.

That balance mattered to us. Coven was never meant to tell anyone how to be a witch. We wanted to make something genuinely useful for the rituals, workings and things people were already coming back to.

But naturally, we couldn’t leave well enough alone.

Every witch needs somewhere to gather all of those pieces, so The Grimoire grew from the same idea.

A chocolate-brown bifold that wraps around the Friends you want close, it gives everything its own place without asking it all to fit inside one notebook. What lives inside can change whenever it needs to. The Grimoire simply keeps it together.

And because Botanical H2O was never going to enter a notebook collaboration without bringing a little jewellery into the mix, five talismans found their way into Coven too.

The symbols became something you could carry

The talismans were never a separate jewellery moment sitting beside the notebooks. They were developed as part of the same system as the Spell Journal itself.

Danielle’s Botanical H2O designs became the five symbols worked through inside the journal, each tied to the sigil work and intentions built into its pages. From there, those same symbols were made physical as charms, so something that begins on the page can come away from it with you.

That connection was important. We did not want the journal to talk about one thing while the jewellery existed in another world entirely. The symbols needed to belong to both.

So the Scissors, Key, Ouroboros, Witch’s Knot and Padlock live inside the Spell Journal as part of the work, then outside it as something you can actually keep close.

Which is probably the point where our notebook collaboration stopped being particularly small.

So we put out The Coven Callout

By then, Coven had become a whole world.

And a world built around gathering and belonging felt a little strange without any actual people in it.

So instead of casting the campaign in the usual way, we did what felt much more like us and opened it up to the people already here. Friend chose five from our community, Botanical H2O chose five from theirs, and The Coven Callout went out into the wild.

A few hundred applications came back.

Which was lovely, obviously. It was also an excellent way to make choosing ten people significantly harder than we had planned.

People told us who they were, why Coven meant something to them and enough wonderfully specific information that we became far too emotionally invested in complete strangers.

Eventually, though, there were ten.

Ten people willing to come to the Gold Coast and step into a campaign that, until then, had mostly existed in moodboards, notebooks and an alarming number of messages between the two teams.

They were never meant to be models dropped into the finished campaign, but the people we built it around.

They were the Coven.

Then Coven became real

There is a point in every campaign where the thing you have been staring at in documents for months suddenly stops feeling theoretical.

For Coven, that happened on the Gold Coast.

The Spell Journal was no longer a layout being nudged around for the hundredth time. The Grimoire was being carried through the shoot. The talismans were being picked up because one meant something different to the person holding it.

And the ten people who had answered The Coven Callout were suddenly standing inside the world we had been building around them.

Then came Coven Night.

What had started as conversations between Danielle and Lana had somehow turned into an actual room full of people, products and all the strange little details we had spent months obsessing over.

That part is hard to manufacture, which is probably why it mattered so much.We had spent months deciding what Coven would look like.

The community was the thing that gave it a pulse.

More than a collection

Coven is still a product collection, obviously. There is a Spell Journal made to genuinely earn its place in someone’s craft, a Grimoire to gather the pieces around it, and the talismans that carry the symbolism beyond the page.

But somewhere along the way, it became much harder to separate the products from everything that happened around them. Botanical H2O brought its symbolism into Friend’s paper world, Danielle and Lana kept pushing the ideas until they worked as beautifully in someone’s hands as they did in our heads, and then we handed the whole thing over to the people we had invited into it.

That might be the part we’ll remember most. A few hundred people answered The Coven Callout. Ten of them trusted us enough to get on a plane to the Gold Coast for a campaign that was, admittedly, a little difficult to explain in one sentence. By the end of it, the thing we had spent months calling Coven actually felt like one.

We made the collection together. The community made it bigger than that.

Welcome to Coven. We saved you a place in the circle.
